Fail: Time Warner Cable’s TWCable TV iPad App Is a Complete Mess

Time Warner Cable took a fine free iPad app allowing authenticated cable TV customers to watch dozens of national cable networks and turned it into a complete disaster in its latest upgrade, now dubbed TWCable TV App for iPad.

Under no circumstances should you consider running this until the inexcusable bugs are worked out in a future release.

We tried this app at Stop the Cap! HQ last evening and ran into immediate problems — troubles shared by the majority of app users who took the time to bottom rate the app in Apple’s App Store.

  1. On several attempts, the application claimed we were running a modified version of the Apple iPad 2’s basic software.  While “jailbreaking” iPad to improve the user experience is important for some, it has never been for us, and we are running an unmodified original firmware version of iPad 2.  But you can’t tell that to Time Warner Cable — the app will refuse to run when this error message displays.
  2. When we were able to launch the application, we found the expanded channel lineup, which now includes around 100 national cable networks enticing… if we could manage to watch any of them.  Within two minutes of launching any channel, we found a frozen, unrecoverable picture.  The only way to restore viewing was to exit the channel and start again.  It left things completely unwatchable.  A few dozen channels you can watch or 100 you cannot watch?  This was not an improvement.
  3. The “interactive program guide” addition allows users to see program listings for up to 7 days. Customers can also configure the guide to display only their favorite channels, in order to avoid scrolling through the entire channel line-up.  That last feature is essential — it will take you 7 days of eternal tedium to scroll through hundreds of channels looking for something to actually watch.  Cable companies need to abandon the traditional “program guide” and deliver an improved service that answers this basic question: what do YOU want to watch.  If I am in the mood for mysteries, show me what I can see.  If I want one of those cheap “true crime” documentaries, let me select from a seedy list of those shows either on now or upcoming.  It no longer matters what is showing on each channel at any time.  We want program content, not a recitation of upcoming programming on the Yarn Channel.
  4. The ability to tune the set-top box from within the new guide in the app. Simply tap on a network logo within the iPad program guide or the “watch on TV” button within the program description to tune directly to the channel.  Playing around with this feature only showed one of my set top boxes — the DVR in the living room.  The one in the bedroom is apparently the bad child you want to forget.  It doesn’t show up at all.  This feature turns your iPad into a glorified remote control.  Its most useful function is to annoy your family as you change channels from another room.  Sick and tired of your significant other watching Design on a Dime when you could be watching Columbo?  Just change the channel on them.  Again and again.
  5. The new app theoretically allows you to remotely manage your DVR recordings.  I say ‘theoretically’ because it worked only inconsistently.  I repeatedly found recordings I wanted to “manage” were completely unmanageable with the app, exiting with an error message.

Time Warner’s control freak mentality over jailbroken versions of iPad no doubt deals with their nightmare scenario: you might be an “unauthenticated” cable cord cutter trying to watch their networks for free, or even worse, record them for later viewing.  It took all of a few hours for iPad enthusiasts to outwit the cable company and work around this roadblock.

Perhaps it’s wrong to complain loudly about a free app like this, but with all of the negative reviews and basic functionality problems, one wonders who beta tested this thing?

Big Brother: Hollywood & Your Internet Provider Will Be Checking Your Download Activity to ‘Protect You’

Stop the Cap! readers Tom and Scott both sent word that the music industry, Hollywood studios, and your Internet Service Provider have teamed up to begin inspecting your downloading activity looking for evidence you are grabbing illegal, copyrighted content from the Internet.

ISPs ranging from Comcast, Verizon, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, and AT&T are installing the “Copyright Alert System,” an industry-approved “solution” to copyright theft of online content.  Your ISP will receive word if either the music or movie industry suspects you are trying to download an episode of your favorite TV show or latest Hollywood film from an “unauthorized” download site.  Then, the ISP will start sending you warnings or redirect your web browsing to Alert Purgatory, the place where you learn you are suspected of copyright theft, but haven’t yet been convicted for it.

If you don’t contact your ISP straight away to protest your innocence, your provider may then begin redirecting all of your web journeys to the copyright theft warning website and leave you there until you convince your ISP you are not doing anything wrong.

The voluntary agreement between service providers and copyright owners delivers very little to consumers, despite protestations to the contrary by the cable industry lobbying group — the National Cable & Telecommunications Association.

“Consumers have a right to know if their broadband account is being used for illegal online content theft, or if their own online activity infringes on copyright rules—inadvertently or otherwise—so that they can correct that activity,” said James Assey, executive vice president of the NCTA.

Innocent or not, consumers who wish to seek an independent review before their ISP redirects every web address to the enforcement page, can get one — for the low, low price of $35.

Where that money ultimately goes is anybody’s guess, and nobody yet understands the exact mechanism of how consumers can prove their innocence.

Stop the Cap! believes this system does not serve consumers well.  Copyright enforcement measures taken by the music and movie industry in the past have proven to be far from well-targeted, using a “sue first, ask questions later” approach that has cost some consumers thousands of dollars to settle threatened litigation that would have cost far more to defend in court — guilty or not.

YouTube videos cited for copyright enforcement claims may irritate those who uploaded them, but never put YouTube visitors at risk of the Copyright Alert System just for landing on one that a studio executive deemed copyright theft.  Forcing a consumer to pay $35 to defend themselves from watching that New Order music video from the 1980s is simply unacceptable.

Copyright theft is a serious problem, and we don’t blame content owners for seeking to protect what is rightfully theirs.  But as we have learned over the last 20 years, overzealous protection measures have always backfired.  Openly available, legally accessed content from sites like Hulu have put a major dent in illegal downloading of entertainment from torrent sites and file hosting providers.  It’s more convenient, and the studios sell well-tolerated advertising to help pay for the costs.

Solutions like that are far superior than spying on web traffic looking for “illegal downloads” using unknown mechanisms which could prove as unreliable as earlier copyright enforcement efforts.  In the past, profit-making companies with an incentive to identify “theft” have been hired to ferret out those suspected to stealing online movies and music.  With a financial motive to lean towards guilt before innocence, subscribers confront the very real possibility they’ll have to pay $35 to try and prove a negative – that they didn’t engage in illegal downloading.

Except for South Korea, nobody uses the Internet more than Canadians.  That’s an important finding in a new report produced for Canada’s telecommunications regulator to better understand the current state of the broadband market in the country.

According to recent reports from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the country generates 2,288 terabytes of data traffic per month per 100,000 residents.  That’s among the highest in the world and comes from avid web browsing, watching online video, and a love affair with smartphones.

But like many relationships, this one is also expensive.  You pay all of the money you have to spare, and your provider delivers you just enough of a usage fix to keep you from running to Ottawa to demand change.

Canadian broadband pricing is in the top third of all OECD-measured nations, with the average price for High Speed Internet running $55.18.  The average median price across all OECD members runs a lot less — $39.23 per month.  If you want to pay less, you have to bundle your landline, cell phone, television, and Internet service with the same provider, or make due with a slow speed “lite user” plan, where average pricing had been running lower until this year.

The average monthly price of the Level 1 basket increased to roughly $35 in 2011, up considerably from $31 the previous year.

Similarly, average monthly price of the Level 2 basket increased this year as well to roughly $50, up from $48 last year.  The average advertized download speed of the services included in the Level 2 basket is close to 6.5 Mbps, which is similar to the average speed in last year’s study.

The average monthly price of the Level 3 basket also increased slightly to $63, but still remains well below the 2008 price of $69 per month.  The average advertized download speed of the services included in the Level 3 basket is roughly 14 Mbps, which is slightly higher than in last year’s study (where the average speed was 12.5 Mbps).

Lastly, the average price of the new Level 4 broadband service basket is roughly $78 per month.  The advertized download speeds for the Level 4 broadband services included in the study range from 25 to 50 Mbps – the average is close to 30 Mbps.

Roughly half of the Canadian broadband service plans surveyed for this study included monthly usage caps.  For those that do, they range from 1 to 13 GB on the Level 1 service basket – the average is 7 GB per month.  The range for the Level 2 service basket is from 25 to 75 GB – the average is 55 GB per month.  The range for the Level 3 service basket is from 75 to 125 GB – the average is just over 90 GB per month.  There has been little change in these monthly usage caps, on average, compared to last year.

In the case of the new Level 4 broadband service basket, for those service providers applying data usage caps, the caps range from 75 to 250 GB per month – the average was close to 140 GB per month.

The Canadian pricing and usage study was developed by Wall Communications for the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.  The best news for Canada?  Your broadband pricing remains relatively stable, with some package pricing reducing the cost of the broadband component.  Standalone service appears to have increased in price only slightly in many markets.  Increased foreign investment in the wireless marketplace is shaking up wireless pricing, as the hegemony of Bell, Telus, Rogers, and Quebecor are under increasing competitive pressure.  It’s a much sunnier outlook than what is taking place in the country to your south.

For Americans, pricing is headed in only one direction: up.

“The Price is Too Damned High”: Verizon Wireless Customers Revolt on Facebook Page

Verizon Wireless might be regretting having a Facebook page open for comments after users started excoriating the company yesterday, when it first publicly broached the subject of its now-implemented wireless Internet Overcharging scheme.

“The price is too damned high,” exclaimed one customer livid that new customers would pay $30 for just 2GB of data usage (one penny higher than the company’s now-retired unlimited use plan).  “$80 for 10GB?  And I thought AT&T was greedy,” commented another.

Judging from the countless hundreds of negative comments, Sprint is about to have a robust quarter of new customer additions defecting from Verizon.  Sprint retains its unlimited use plans on both its 3G and 4G networks, although the speeds do not compare favorably to Verizon’s LTE/4G network.

Matt Hamann summed up the sentiment of customers who despise usage caps, even if they are currently grandfathered on an unlimited use plan:

Hey, Verizon…I will *never* add another smartphone to my plan until you come up with fairer data prices. $30 for 2GB?? You gotta be kidding! How is this fair? How is it in your customer’s best interests?

Bottom line: IT ISN’T! It’s 90% corporate greed. What’s the best way to get more revenue from customers, huh?

Listen here: I’m already looking for better options. As soon as I find one, I’m gone. And I’ll take every family member and friend that I can along with me.

The best mobile provider you are no more.

Verizon created considerable confusion for their customers by saying nothing until just a day before the new plans took effect.  Although the media has covered the imminent end of unlimited data for over a week, customers have not been notified by Verizon itself, despite one customer’s claim Verizon told him they mailed letters in advance of the plan changes.

As we have reported, those customers with pre-existing unlimited data plans will be able to retain them indefinitely, even if they upgrade to a new phone in the future, and even if they renew their contract.  Only new customers, those changing plans or any new lines added to a family plan will face the “wonderful” tiered pricing Verizon tweeted about this morning.

Things got considerably more confusing over the mobile Hotspot feature — a tethering application built into most Verizon smartphones.

Verizon Wireless representatives were sharing conflicting information with Stop the Cap! about the availability and pricing of this feature as late as this morning, but we’re now confident we have an answer the company will commit to for impacted customers.

For 3G Verizon Wireless smartphones, nothing changes.  It was $20 a month for 2GB before July 7th, and remains the same going forward.  For LTE/4G phone owners, things are much more confusing.  Existing customers have been enjoying free tethering on a special promotion made available only to 4G customers for several months now.  That promotion officially ended this morning.  A software update is imminent for 4G phone owners which will remove the free Hotspot feature and replace it with a prompt for one of two options:

  • a $20 for 2GB Hotspot plan
  • $30 Hotspot plan with unlimited usage

Most would be foolish not to lock in unlimited tethering with the $30 plan, which is a much better deal going forward.  Where the confusion comes in is for customers rushing out to upgrade their existing phones to a 4G phone just to lock in unlimited data -and- unlimited Hotspot tethering.

We spoke yesterday afternoon to Verizon Wireless representatives who denied any knowledge of the $30 unlimited tethering plan or confused it with the basic unlimited data plan.  Eventually, we were told only pre-existing customers with already-activated 4G phones would qualify for the option of choosing the $30 unlimited tether plan.  It was too late, even before yesterday at midnight, for others to hop on board this deal.

But by this morning, we were starting to get different answers, culminating in a Verizon representative telling Stop the Cap! any customer who placed an order for a 4G smartphone through Verizon Wireless that invoked a plan change (part of the process of ordering the phone direct from Verizon assures that) would have likely found the addition of the “Verizon Mobile Hotspot Promo” as one of the line items added to your plan as part of the order.  If so, that qualifies you for the $30 unlimited tethering option, even if you are still waiting for your 4G phone to arrive in the mail.

Verizon claims after you receive and activate your new 4G phone, attempts to use the Hotspot feature should offer you the choice for the $30 Hotspot plan.  If it does not, we have the name and contact details of a Verizon employee that should be able to cut through the red tape and get you this plan.  The only requirement is you had to order the phone before midnight on July 7th.

Verizon does not know at this point if customers will be offered the promotional $30 unlimited price for a limited time only, or will forfeit it forever if they do not accept it immediately (or drop the optional add-on at some point).

Eddie “The Hookup Man” Nabbed in Ohio for Alleged Illegal Cable Hookups

Tough economic times often bring an incentive to steal cable service, especially when being given the name and number of a “connection” that can hook you up for service priced at almost $75 a month for a one-time fee of $50-75 dollars.

Time Warner Cable, among other Cleveland-area utilities, were on the hunt for one alleged under-the-table installer — Eddie Hunt — for nearly a year.

Last Wednesday, a sting paid off.

“He’s kind of known as the hook-up man. If you want to go the black market route and risk getting in trouble, he’s the man, ” Time Warner Security Director Kevin Pratt told Cleveland TV station WKYC.

Hunt is certainly qualified to install cable — he’s been allegedly fired twice from his last two jobs working for cable companies.

Hunt allegedly charged local residents a “one time” fee for unlimited cable, until security measures cut the free service off.  Time Warner claims Hunt would then be back for more money to restore the service.

Hunt was arrested by local authorities.  Time Warner Cable says it will run an amnesty program for those with illicit cable hookups, allowing them to become paying customers without legal penalties.  But the cable company says it will give only one warning before they would move to have customers prosecuted for cable theft.

Cable companies estimate at least 14 percent of their “customers” aren’t paying for cable service.  The industry claims this hurts local communities through reduced franchise fee payments and raises prices for everyone else.

“It costs you and me, the government and everybody,” said Pratt. “It’s definitely not a victimless crime.”
