Wanted: Impressions About Clearwire’s 4G Service (a/k/a Road Runner Mobile/Comcast High Speed 2Go)

Phillip Dampier July 8, 2010 Editorial & Site News, Video, Wireless Broadband 5 Comments

I’d like to hear your impressions of Clear’s 4G wireless broadband service, which is also known as Road Runner Mobile in Time Warner Cable territories or Comcast High Speed 2Go where Comcast provides cable service.

I am specifically looking for speed results, coverage impressions — whether the coverage maps reflect reality or not, and what type of wireless modem you’ve chosen with the service.  Also, customer service impressions are welcomed.  Feel free to leave your comments in our comment section or use the Contact Us link above if you’d prefer to remain anonymous.  Please remember to include your city and state.

YouTube is littered with negative reviews and complaints about the service, but I’d like to hear from our readers.

Here is one annoyed customer who literally attached her USB modem to a broom handle and mounted it halfway up the side of her home and still could not connect. (Warning: Profanity) (3 minutes)

My wife as a Sprint EVO 4G that uses Clearwire’s WIMAX network (same as above). When it can connect it make browsing and downloading on a phone a pleasure. However, coverage is spotty and pretty much non-existent indoors. I don’t know if that’s because it’s a higher frequency signal or if there simply aren’t as many 4G towers as there are 3G ones. If I get a chance, I’ll do a speed test using one of the speed test apps from the Android Market on a 4G connection. I’m talking about coverage in Rochester, NY – specifically 4G can be… Read more »

In NC, we have some legislators saying we don’t need fiber because 4G is oogles and boogles better. I wish I knew what they were smoking to make a statement like that…

I’ve been hearing other people say that 4G+ technologies will eventually become mainstream home connections. Not sure if they have ever seen a fiber connection before or know how wireless works, but I can hear you with that 🙂

If it is anything like TV OTA signals, during the day, stations come in weaker than usual. At night, they come in stronger. During times of bad weather, the signal is even more degraded. So if 4G is anything like that, with radio signals, I foresee troubles for that tech being main stream. On the strictly mobile side, it makes perfect sense though.

edit: Meant to reply to Smith6612…

How unfair a video. Does your site have a gripe with Clear? Clear knows its signal is not good everywhere and that is why you get 7-14 day evaluation periods to see if your in covered area and if your situation (home, hi rise, condo etc) allows good signal. The woman in this video can take the equipment back if she can’t get a signal and get a refund. Worth trying and no harm to do so. I have had it 6 months with the in home service. It is sold and used as a primary home connection. I have… Read more »
