3 Owners in 3 Years And Lawrence, Kansas Still Stuck With Harshly-Capped Cable Broadband

Top-rated WOW! only delivers service in a handful of cities in the midwest, but is getting larger after acquiring Knology.

Lawrence, Kansas can’t catch a break. While their neighbors in Kansas City are preparing for Google’s unlimited-use gigabit broadband, the three different owners of the area’s cable operation in the last three years have stuck local residents with usage caps as low as 5GB per month.

What began as Sunflower Broadband, formerly owned by the The World Company, which publishes the daily Lawrence Journal-World, has now been sold to a new owner that plans to leave the current caps in place.

Knology of Kansas Inc., a division of West Point, Ga.-based Knology acquired the Sunflower operation for $165 million in 2010. This week, WideOpenWest (WOW) announced it had completed a system-wide acquisition of Knology, including the former Sunflower system for $1.5 billion.

Consumers in Lawrence hoping for something better from one the nation’s top-consumer-rated cable operators will apparently have to wait. The company announced it was planning no immediate changes to its services or rates, said Rod Kutemeier, who currently remains general manager of the operation.

“Which means while Kansas City becomes a gigabit broadband city with unlimited-use broadband ranging in price from free to $70 a month, we’re stuck with this lousy cable operation that wants $53 a month for 18/2Mbps service with a nasty 50GB data cap and up to $1/GB overlimit fee,” says former Knology customer Sam. “I switched to U-verse, which is only mildly less criminal with their 250GB cap.”

Sam’s price represents standalone broadband service and includes Knology’s $5 monthly modem rental fee. If he purchased video service from the company, his broadband rate would be $10 lower.

Sunflower Broadband introduced one of the country’s first broadband Internet Overcharging schemes, limiting customers on the company’s lowest speed tier to 5GB of usage per month. The company later introduced devotees of unlimited, flat rate access to a reduced priority unlimited option for just shy of $60 a month, with no quoted speed or promise of performance.

Lawrence cable subscribers were hopeful the new owners would adopt pricing and service similar to what WOW offers elsewhere. WOW tells its other customers it does not impose usage limits or consumption-based billing of any kind. But that doesn’t hold true in Lawrence.

“They need to get rid of the current management which continues this ripoff scheme and bring in the same WOW mindset that gave them top ratings in magazines like Consumer Reports,” shares Stop the Cap! reader Sam.

WOW currently offers most customers broadband speeds of 2/1, 15/1, 30/3, and 50/5Mbps. Knology of Kansas offers service at speeds of 5/1, 18/2, and 50/5Mbps — all usage capped.

Pricing and packages for Lawrence, Kansas’ local cable company will remain the same… for now.

Kansas City Time Warner Cable Customers Getting Downtown Wi-Fi Access, Starter Internet

Sorry Kansas City — Time Warner Cable is not bringing faster broadband to compete with Google Fiber. Instead, the company today unveiled a new network of local Wi-Fi hotspots, along with an invitation to area businesses to help expand Wi-Fi access.

The new Wi-Fi initiative begins with 14 hot spots in downtown Kansas City, the Crossroads Arts District, the River Market, Brookside, Waldo, Westport, the 18th and Vine District, Loose Park, plus the downtowns of Parkville, Leavenworth and other sites.

Time Warner said any of its commercial customers with Business Class broadband can share their connection by hosting a Wi-Fi hot spot themselves, with the cable company supplying the necessary equipment.

Company spokesman Mike Pedelty said the service will complement businesses’ existing Wi-Fi offerings, particularly in restaurants and other high traffic public venues.

But not everyone will have access. Time Warner Cable is restricting the Wi-Fi network to its own customers with Standard broadband service or above. Customers can access the new network with their Time Warner-supplied e-mail address and password.

Additionally, Time Warner has added Kansas City to the roster of communities where it sells disadvantaged families access to a discounted broadband package called Starter Internet. The package will match Google’s entry level 5Mbps service plan (with 1Mbps upload speed) and will run $10 a month. Google offers anyone in its service area 5Mbps service for a one-time fee of $200, payable in $20 installments.

For the time being, Time Warner Cable is leaving broadband speeds unchanged for its customers in Kansas City, although that may change in the future as Google’s fiber network continues to expand across the city.

A Comcast customer in Albany, Calif. got the cable company to pay her $290 towards the purchase of a new television after her cable box went out with a bang.

Kay Corlett’s television, plugged into the back of the box, was an unintended casualty.

Corlett had no trouble getting Comcast to replace her defunct cable box at no charge, but her television was another matter.

“I was very distressed because I had the feeling that they caused the problem so they should be taking care of it very quickly,” Corlett told KGO-TV News.

Corlett played phone tag with a supervisor assigned to investigate her claim and other Comcast employees proved unable to help.

Attitudes changed when KGO’s “7 On Your Side” consumer team intervened. With Comcast’s ongoing intransigence threatening to end up on the evening news, Comcast quickly asked their insurance company to cover the loss.

Corlett received a check for $290 which she put towards the purchase of a new and improved television.

Comcast called the incident extremely rare and recommended customers use surge protectors on their electronic equipment. It was unclear whether the cable box spontaneously failed or if a surge in a nearby power line caused the problem.

Time Warner Cable Explores Charging New “Future Proof” Technology Fee: $6.99/Month

Would you pay Time Warner Cable $6.99 a month to guarantee they will update your equipment on a regular basis to provide you with reliable service?

An unspecified number of customers participating in a Time Warner Cable focus group are being asked that question this month as the cable company ponders charging the new fee in the future.

“As technology, Internet speeds, and entertainment options keep getting better, you want, and need, your equipment to keep up. That’s why we’re introducing Time Warner Cable’s Future Proof Guarantee. Starting next month you will see a $6.99 equipment lease fee on your bill, which will guarantee you have the right equipment for all your TWC services. That means we will keep your Modem, and DVR set-top box up-to-date so you can enjoy a seamless, reliable experience and the service you expect.”

To be clear, Time Warner is only considering this new fee and is testing the concept with its focus group to gauge potential customer reaction.

The Stop the Cap! reader and focus group member who shared the news with us was not impressed.

“This feels like another money grab from an already very-profitable company,” our tipster told both us and the cable company.

The new fee would double-down on Time Warner’s already lucrative new cable modem rental fee, now $3.95 a month. The new $7 fee would cover “upgrades” that most subscribers might assume they were already entitled to as paying customers. We have no word if this fee would replace existing equipment rental fees or would apply in addition to those rental fees.

Any customer renting equipment can generally be assured of getting a free “technology upgrade” just by swapping existing equipment at any Time Warner Cable store — no additional fee required.

Time Warner Cable Offers Triple Play Customers Free Xbox 360 & $150-500 Best Buy Gift Card

Time Warner Cable customers who sign up for a triple play package between now and Jan. 5 can qualify for a free Xbox 360 4GB console and a Best Buy gift card worth $150. Customers signing up for Signature Home ($199/month) receive an even fatter reward — a $500 Best Buy gift card. Both new and existing customers qualify.

The deal also discounts Time Warner’s TV, broadband, and phone service to $89.99 a month for a year, although equipment may cost extra.

Those interested must sign up through Best Buy to qualify.

Ironically, the Xbox 360 allows customers to stream video content from companies other than Time Warner. But the cable company has traditionally never minded much if customers use third-party devices to access content, as long as they are using Time Warner Cable’s broadband service to do it.

The company recently announced it would step up the aggressiveness of some of its customer promotions in an effort to reduce customer churn.

Best Buy does not mind the extra traffic in its stores. The electronics retailer continues to face challenges getting customers inside their stores to buy.
