Time Warner Cable Boosting Maximum Speed to 100-300Mbps This Year In Select Markets

Phillip Dampier January 20, 2014 Broadband Speed, Competition 6 Comments

twcTime Warner Cable executives, as part of a defense strategy against a takeover bid from Charter Communications, made clear it intended to boost Internet speeds for customers without any help from Charter Cable.

The cable company has been criticized for offering only a maximum of 50/5Mbps service in most of its markets, but company officials made it clear the maximum speed available to most customers will be increased this year to 100Mbps in many areas and 300Mbps in selected cities — likely those facing competition from Verizon FiOS, AT&T’s fiber-based U-verse in Austin, and Google Fiber in Austin and Kansas City, where it competes with Time Warner Cable.

This is good news!

It may be a while before I’ll be able to obtain Google Fiber access, so I’ll gladly sign up for 100Mbps as soon as TWC offers it in Austin. Google Fiber and ATT Gigapower U-Verse Fiber, have really marginalized TWCs ability to compete in the Central Texas market.

The real question is what will the upload speed be. Having 100 down and still 5 up doesn’t really help. Time Warner needs to up the upload speed. I’d definitely pay more money if I got at least 10 but would prefer more. Going from 30 to 100 without more upload isn’t worth much money.

Like David, I don’t really care about added download speeds unless faster uploads are also available. But TWC will have to add channels in both directions in my area to get enough capacity to do anything above 50/5, so I’m not sure when that’ll actually happen.

Heck, it’d be wonderful if TWC even matched what Cablevision is doing in NYC…101/35 for $100/mo…but we’re stuck nearly five years behind the curve on that…until Google Fiber shows up anyway. Or GigaPower.

I’ll take TWC 100Mbps service for $7.00/mo, please.

I’ll be able to get Google Fiber, but 5Mbps is too little, and $70/mo for 1000Mbps is a bit out of our budget…

So when is this coming to Columbus, OH? Tired of no one offering more than 50Mbps…

I agree, Columbus needs higher speeds and better choices. Wish Google Fiber were here!!
