Scored first place again this year.

Scored first place again this year.

Consumer Reports has released its 2013 ratings for broadband service providers, showing independently owned cable companies and fiber optic broadband services from companies large and small deliver the best bang for the buck.

WOW, a small cable operator serving limited areas of the country yet again achieved first place in the ratings, appearing in the May issue. Verizon and Frontier’s FiOS fiber networks rated #2 and #5 respectively. (Frontier acquired its fiber to the home network from Verizon in 2009.)

In general, cable broadband service scored considerably better than telephone company DSL. Wireless broadband did more poorly, with Verizon’s 4G LTE network in 23rd place. Satellite scored worst, with both ViaSat and Hughes among the bottom three.

Verizon's ongoing speed boosts assure the company of high ratings for its FiOS fiber network.

Mediacom once again took honors as America’s worst cable company. This year, it managed to score even worse than ViaSat, formerly WildBlue. Other bottom dwellers: FairPoint DSL, AT&T DSL, Frontier DSL, Charter Cable and Comcast Cable.

Compared with last year, few companies saw dramatic improvements or declines, despite glowing press releases touting improvements and investment.

Time Warner Cable, which scored 19th last year dropped to 20th place this year.

TDS, an independent phone company, managed a surprising 5th place score last year, despite only giving most of its customers DSL service. This year it is in eighth place.

Cablevision, which faced criticism for an overburdened broadband network last year managed almost no change in ratings this year, despite a measurable improvement in service.

Consumer Reports’ ratings are largely based on customer perceptions shared with the magazine in its annual questionnaire. CenturyLink may have delivered an improved experience for its customers between 2012 and 2013. Last year the phone company was in 18th place. This year it improved to 11th place.

I never see my Cable Co on any lists! I think Atlantic Broadband is the worst in the USA they claim they are the nations 12 largest Cable Co, they refuse to comply with FCC laws on owing your own tuning equipment hence not deducting the cost of their boxes from your bill! I even had the Regional VP tell me to my face they will not comply with the FCC law!! and 9 months after filing a complaint with the FCC they have ignored all of the FCC request’s to comply (http://www.fcc.gov/guides/cablecard-know-your-rights) I was told by the VP that… Read more »

Yes we are being charged for 3 boxes and a DVR I have a Ceton InfinTv tuner and none of there equipment except for 1 Cable card the FCC complaint is 9 month’s old now and they have lived up to their statement that they will not comply or respond to the FCC! I just called the FCC and they said they have to find what steps they need to take next, as far as the selling of ABB to a Canadian company I knew about that I am just baffled that they are not afraid of the FCC!

I can only say good things about Atlantic broadband’s Internet service.. No data caps and pretty good speeds is a blessing these days.. The fact you filed a complaint with the FCC for the 3 dollars a month discount you believe you deserve is a little silly to me.. Don’t stress about the little things you don’t get away with my friend.. I’ve had big providers like Comcast and time Warner, and you’re much better off in an Atlantic broadband area.

I think you have it a little mixed up! you need to read the FCC Cable Card LAW they owe me the rental fee’s for each box I do not need to rent that = about $35.00 a month for 2 HD Boxes and A HD DVR that = more than $3.00 yes there Internet is fine but they refuse to obey they Law 35×9 months = $315.00!!!

Unbeliveable some one prefers ABB over Comcast ABB is a Backwoods Cable Co there TV service is so far behind everyone else!!!! I cant get the 1st 100 channels I pay for with a cable card tuner this includes TIVO owners because they only broadcast the lower channels in Analog!!! HMM all Major TV networks are Digital Only including A&E but I can’t get A&E through my Cable Card because ABB converts the Digital Signal they recive to Analog only The former Regional VP’s excuse for it! to many people still have old TV’s and do not want a box!… Read more »
