Hot Springs Family Gets $16,000 Verizon Wireless Bill for Wireless Data Usage

Woe to those who forget to sign up for a wireless data plan from Verizon Wireless.

The cell phone provider recently sent a $16,000 bill to one Hot Springs, Arkansas family for wireless data usage racked up on a daughter’s phone the family didn’t cover with a wireless data plan.

Chris Brown couldn’t believe his eyes when he opened his phone bill online.

“The first thing I think of is, this thing costs more than my truck.  It cost more than a house payment, I couldn’t fathom it, it’s mind-blowing,” Brown told KLRT-TV.

This isn’t the first time this has happened.  A month earlier, the Brown family was billed $3,000 for similar usage and the family asked Verizon Wireless to shut off access to data services on the affected phone, but the charges kept on coming anyway.

Brown says once he got to look at the phone usage online, he saw that the phone was connected to the Internet when the family didn’t even know it.

Verizon Wireless offers tips to customers with children:

  • Limit the times of day they’re allowed to make calls.
  • Keep your kids from getting onto your own phone’s Internet by setting up a password.
  • If you have a limited plan, you will get an alert and have to give approval before you exceed your number of kilobytes or megabytes for the month.

Of course, had Verizon Wireless followed through on what Brown asked for — shutting data access off altogether, none of this would have ever happened.

Other Little Rock customers, especially those forced to move from Alltel to Verizon Wireless, are running into similar experiences.

Among the horror stories:

“My son had the same problem. He was told he had unlimited internet usage and then received a bill for more than $7,000. Verizon had recorded a phone call from my son to customer service and that was the only thing that saved him. But it took more than 4 months and his phone service being disconnected twice before the situation was resolved.”

“I’m not a bit surprised at that ridiculous bill from Verizon! I had the same problem for months last year, to the point that I had to put unlimited texting on both my grandsons’ phones. Then to top that off, we got a bill that had goo-gobs of texting billed to my husband’s phone (to the tune of $9.30), which is rarely used at all. But, this is the killer–all the texts received on his phone were from Verizon, all 62 of them! As soon as my contract is up with them, I will be switching. All the time we had Alltel we never had any problems. The problems started as soon as Verizon took over.”

“I’m not one bit surprised by the ridiculous phone bill that the Hot Springs family received. I also received my first month’s bill from Verizon last year for over $1500. I almost had a heart attack. Verizon lowered the bill, but two months later, even though we carefully monitored the air time, we went over by four minutes and they charged me an additional $90. That was it for Verizon. They are a bunch of crooks. I hooked up to my local phone carrier for $34 a month and I haven’t had one problem since. Verizon should be investigated.”

[Updated] Time Warner Cable Offers Their Broadband Network to Cell Phone Companies; ‘Exaflood’ Apparently Doesn’t Apply

Time Warner Cable is offering mobile phone providers a solution to their clogged wireless networks — clog ours instead!

Business Week notes the cable company has been aggressively pitching its broadband network to cell phone companies in New York City, which can be used to transport cell phone calls and mobile data between cell towers and the providers’ operations centers.  The “backhaul” network cell phone companies rely on to move calls and data between the cell tower nearest you and your provider’s distribution network is often the source of the worst bottlenecks, especially when those networks are connected by standard copper telephone wiring, as many still are.

The more customers sharing a low capacity copper line, the slower your data speeds and greater the chance for dropped calls.  Although some providers have expanded their fiber capacity to reach busy cell towers, many more are still stuck with copper… until now.

Time Warner Cable’s offer to offload clogged cell phone networks onto the cable company’s broadband backbone has become extraordinarily profitable to the nation’s second largest cable operator.

In fact, it has become Time Warner Cable’s fastest-growing business after revenue tripled last year, Craig Collins, senior vice president of business services told Business Week.

We are talking $3.6 billion dollars in revenue in 2012 from wireless carriers alone, according to researcher GeoResults, Inc.

“Backhaul is a growth play that we are pursuing aggressively,” Collins said. “These mobile players want to get the bandwidth they need at a cost-effective price and our structure allows them to get that pretty seamlessly.”

U.S. smartphone use has grown almost 700 percent in four years, according to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. Mobile-data volume is more than doubling annually as people use devices like the iPhone, BlackBerry and Google Inc.’s new Nexus One to send photos, watch videos and surf the Web. When networks jam, consumers face dropped calls and may find they can’t access Web pages or TV, analysts said.

The coming "exaflood" doesn't seem to worry Time Warner Cable, except when profits from consumers are at stake

Apparently the “exaflood” scare theory that suggests broadband networks are becoming hopelessly clogged does not apply to Time Warner Cable, because the company easily found plenty of free bandwidth in metropolitan New York City to profit from wireless phone traffic.

Not to be outdone, Comcast expects $1 billion from the wireless backhaul gravy train over time, according to its February 3rd conference call with investors.  Comcast is in a unique position to help ease congestion in San Francisco, where the cable operator provides service to some of the same customers who wander the city with Apple iPhones on AT&T’s overclogged Bay Area network.

Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt doesn’t want to limit the potential revenue to just the wireless big boys — he wants to offer service to carriers large and small:

While Time Warner Cable declined to specify if AT&T, the lone U.S. carrier for the iPhone, is a customer, the New York- based cable company says it wants to sign carriers large and small. Chief Executive Officer Glenn Britt alluded to AT&T’s extra iPhone traffic in a December conference call.

“They want to get that into a cable as fast as they can,” Britt said, referring to overloads. His company began leasing backhaul in 2008 and posted $26 million in sales last year, less than 1 percent of the company’s total sales. Collins declined to give a forecast for 2010.

All this, of course, comes ironically to those Time Warner Cable customers who were subjected to Internet Overcharging experiments from Time Warner Cable just about one year ago.  Apparently, the exaflood only applies to consumers who face enormous broadband pricing increases and/or usage limits because of “overburdened” broadband networks.

Not so overburdened that the company can’t make room for billions in new earnings from cell phone companies, of course.

Virgin Mobile Broadband Increasing Usage Allowances, While Maintaining Existing Pricing; Cricket Could Be Next

Virgin Mobile’s Broadband2Go prepaid mobile broadband service is increasing usage allowances in hopes of attracting new customers at current prices.

The service, launched last June, has not been as successful as it could be, especially in markets where competitors like Cricket offer no-commitment wireless broadband for $40 a month for up to 5GB of usage, for a lower initial cost.

Sprint, which now owns the Virgin Mobile brand, isn’t lowering prices, but it is increasing usage allowances.

Before:

$10 buys you 100MB of access that expires 10 days after activation.
$20 buys you 250MB of access that expires 30 days after activation.
$40 buys you 600MB of access that expires 30 days after activation.
$60 buys you 1GB of access that expires 30 days after activation.

Now:

The high end Virgin Mobile plan now matches many postpaid plans for pricing and usage allowance, without a two year contract.  But it’s still priced $20 higher per month than Cricket.  ConnectedPlanet notes:

According to Virgin Mobile chief marketing officer Neil Lindsay, more than 70% of Virgin’s customers said they signed up for Broadband2Go because of the flexibility to change the plans as they needed more or less bandwidth and to pay only for what they needed. Virgin is targeting those cord cutters, such as students or families, who may be using the Broadband2go as a replacement for their at-home Internet service. Virgin’s own surveys indicate that this at-home group already includes 16% of its Broadband2Go customers. Of its user base, 30% also use the card more than four times per week, and 47% asked for additional data on their existing plans.

In turn, Leap Wireless, which owns Cricket, is hinting it may be looking at its own pricing and usage allowances to maintain competitiveness.  No specifics yet, but Leap’s 4th quarter earning results were hardly impressive, reporting a wider loss than Wall Street analysts expected, as competition and a weak economy helped erode profits.  The company does not plan to expand into new cities in 2010, but will offer nationwide coverage for existing customers with expanded roaming agreements.  Also on the way — smartphones from Blackberry and at least one Android phone.

Sprint: ‘Our $69.99 is Worth More Than Their $69.99′ — Wireless Competition Heats Up

Sprint, America’s third largest mobile phone and wireless company, has launched a marketing war on its bigger competitors AT&T and Verizon Wireless scoffing at both providers’ $69.99 “unlimited” calling plans.

“Recently AT&T and Verizon have attempted to confuse the marketplace by lowering their pricing to $69.99, but theirs are for calling only,” said Mike Goff, Sprint’s vice president of corporate marketing.

Sprint launched a new advertising campaign this morning featuring CEO Dan Hesse calling out both carriers for effectively confusing consumers.

Hesse explains most people use their cell phones for more than just making and receiving calls.  Hesse said his larger competitors charge substantially more to use data services, and that many of the latest handsets don’t qualify for the special pricing.

Both AT&T and Verizon Wireless have started to require consumers with so-called “smartphones” to sign up with a data plan, adding to the customer’s bill whether or not they actually use such services.  Sprint says their unlimited plan also bundles unlimited web browsing, texting, and GPS navigation for the same price — $69.99, available on any phone they sell.

Sprint has had its hands full trying to stem the ongoing loss of its customers to larger competitors.

AT&T has benefited from an exclusive sales agreement for Apple’s iPhone, while Verizon Wireless achieved the top spot among U.S. carriers for its perceived widest coverage area.  Sprint has neither, and historically poor customer service to boot.

Will Sprint’s new campaign make an impact?

Roger Entner, head of telecom research for the Nielsen Co., told Brandweek that AT&T and Verizon are in such a commanding position in the market right now that they are unlikely to respond to Sprint. “They have the luxury of being able to ignore [Sprint],” said Entner, who noted that both AT&T and Verizon added millions of new subscribers in the fourth quarter, many at Sprint’s expense.

Sprint has managed to at least slow customer defections.  In the last quarter of 2009, Sprint lost 148,000 subscribers.  The previous quarter, the company lost 545,000 customers.

Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Verizon Wireless for “Mystery Data Charges”

A class action lawsuit has been filed this week to recoup what a law firm has called “improper data charges” for Verizon Wireless customers who discovered $1.99 fees on their phone bills for “data charges” many customers claim they never used.

Goldman Scarlato & Karon, P.C., a law firm with offices in Cleveland, OH and Conshohocken, PA, filed the suit against the wireless giant in federal court in New Jersey.

The lawsuit alleges non-smartphone customers frequently incurred “data fees” on their monthly Verizon Wireless bills.

Stop the Cap! reported on this in 2009, and believes most of the charges appeared after consumers accidentally triggered their phone’s built-in mobile web browser.  Although Verizon Wireless claims it does not charge for accidental access, customers report otherwise.  Many have fought to have data access blocked to prevent future charges.  The fees potentially impacted any account that does not have a monthly data plan.  Verizon Wireless offers a pay-per-access plan starting at $1.99 for non-data customers.

The lawsuit seeks to reimburse customers should the charges be deemed improper.

Bad Actor: Telecom New Zealand’s Repeated Mobile/Broadband Outages Plague Country

Telecom New Zealand is under fire as consumer groups, business leaders, and customers condemn the company for a second major outage wiping out wireless mobile broadband and cell phone service for tens of thousands of customers on the South Island.  Dunedin, Invercargill, Timaru and Queenstown were among the areas worst affected for the service problems impacting the company’s much-touted “XT” WCDMA network.  Affected customers could not access mobile broadband, send or receive text messages or phone calls for several days.

Company officials believe a piece of hardware installed at multiple cell tower sites is responsible for the network outages.  It’s just the latest of a never-ending series of problems for New Zealand’s largest telecommunications provider.

In December, a botched software upgrade brought another major outage for the provider, which now risks being defined by customers as unreliable.

Telecommunications Users Association chief executive Ernie Newman said, “From here, it looks bizarre. Even third world countries don’t experience outages of that magnitude and length.  The first time before Christmas people were forgiving. This week has made people think. But they cannot afford a third time.”

The expensive promotional campaign launching the “XT” 3G UMTS network was itself highly controversial when the company decided to use British actors in its advertising campaign, annoying New Zealanders.  Although a company official touted the “world class advanced XT network” as capable of speeds better than 20Mbps, the company’s website notes average customers are more likely to find speeds somewhere in the 3Mbps/750kbps range.

“After marketing XT as a Rolls-Royce brand, Telecom will be looking at ways to rehabilitate it in consumers eyes,” telecommunications analyst Rosalie Nelson told the New Zealand Herald.

The damage control teams have moved into place, and Telecom today announced a $5 million (NZ Dollars) compensation package for customers south of Taupo who were impacted:

Customers whose service was degraded on Wednesday 27 January:

  • Prepaid consumer customers – $10 credit
  • Postpaid consumer customers – One week’s worth of plan charges, including Telecom Extras, such as texting or data packages
  • Telecom Retail SME customers and Gen-i corporate customers – Two weeks’ worth of plan charges, including Telecom Extras, such as texting or data packages

Customers whose service was severely impacted for up to three days between Wednesday 27 January and 10pm Friday 29 January:

  • Prepaid consumer customers – $20 credit
  • Postpaid consumer customers – Two weeks’ worth of plan charges, including Telecom Extras, such as texting or data packages
  • Telecom Retail SME customers and Gen-i corporate customers – Four weeks’ worth of plan charges, including Telecom Extras, such as texting or data packages

Telecom is also donating more than $250,000 to community projects across the lower South Island.

The company’s problems got extensive media coverage, including daily reports on New Zealand’s national news.  Customers were outraged, many spending hours trying to reach Telecom by phone.  Many others argued their way out of service contracts, penalty-free, and switched to Vodafone, the country’s other major wireless provider.

Another ‘Meter Problem’: South Africa’s MTN Bills Customers Thousands of Dollars for Usage the Meter Says They Owe

South Africans using the wireless services of MTN may be in for quite a shock in the coming weeks as the company attempts to collect for customer data usage charges it forgot to bill last fall.  Some customers have discovered the company automatically debited their checking accounts for thousands of dollars of “back usage” customers deny using.  Once again, when choosing whether to believe a faulty usage meter and billing system or the customer, Internet Overchargers believe the meter that fills their pockets with customer cash.

Benzi Kornizer is one customer impacted by the data discrepancy.  Despite using MTN’s data service for several months without incident, the company is trying to withdraw R10000 ($1,321 US Dollars) from Benzi’s checking account.  Kornizer pays R600 ($79) per month for 3GB of wireless data usage.  MTN’s usage meter, after the installation of a new billing system, claims he used more – more than $1,000 more.

“I received a letter from MTN, with no reference number, no date, no details of the problem and now I am having trouble getting my problem resolved,” Kornizer told ITWeb.

MTN believes in their usage meter, which it is using as justification to back-bill customers, despite admissions of ongoing billing problems.  Affected customers are receiving letters signed by customer relations executive Eddie Moyce admitting prior under-billing.

“MTN is in the process of re-processing the used data and customer call data records and will debit the affected customers’ accounts accordingly,” the letter states.

MTN’s billing practices, now a story in the South African media, resulted in a statement released by the company.

“We are extremely sensitive to the fact that billing errors have had an impact on the pockets of our subscribers. We will not suspend any voice or data contracts as a result of this error, and MTN will credit the accounts where double-billing errors occurred. MTN subscribers will also retain their loyalty points accrued over this period. MTN will investigate and evaluate every query on a case-by-case basis,” says Moyce.

He explains that the trouble stems from an upgrade of the billing system the company is using. “We have invested millions in a new billing system, which went live at the end of 2009 and is proving to be successful. However, we are still working hard to rectify the fallout from the previous system.”

The company admits the complete transition to the new billing system may take years to complete.  That leaves customers like Kornizer playing broadband usage roulette, never certain what the company’s meter will finally read, even months after the billing cycle ends.  Although MTN claims their meter is “proving to be successful,” customer complaints are pouring into consumer protection agencies and websites.

Kornizer is threatening to sue MTN in court.

A sampling of the complaints from just the last 48 hours about MTN’s Usage Meter on consumer site HelloPeter, which has logged more than 9,000 customer complaints thus far against MTN:

“My December bill for my MTN Data Contract suddenly hits R3000 despite an normal usage of +-R320. I call the Autopage Accounts only to be told that there is a billing problem. However, any reply from MTN that this is a backbilling issue can be refuted. On my itemised billing, it shows that on Christmas day I used 1.2GB of data in 2 sessions a few minutes apart! Now, my modem is a 1.8Mbps but downloading 600MB in seconds is absolutely incredible!”

“Last month I received a data usage bill for R1901 which I thought was insane as it has always been R249 per month.  I queried it and a itemised bill was sent though, which showed the ‘usage’, so I could not argue, then on the 23rd I received an SMS saying MTN incorrectly billed customers for that period and we would get a full credit for the incorrect amount. Then I check my account and another R2693 was debited from my account.”

“My average monthly MTN bill for internet access via a modem is R271.27 which was boosted by a November bill for R521.20. I paid this amount even though it looked very high. I was astounded by my December bill for R 5395.48! I spoke to [customer service] who tells me that I must wait 25 working days for my query to be assessed! In the meantime I must pay the R5394.48 or else my [service] will be suspended! MTN insists I must pay before they audit my account.”

“I migrated my internet from a 500 meg to a 3 gig package, completed the paperwork and was assured that everything is in place and will be faxed through for the migration. After receiving an account for over R11000,  I was informed that the migration was never made. I do not have the forms, but the personnel remembered the transaction and called the accounts department. Answer, ‘Sorry, we made a mistake and did not do the migration for you, but you did use the data so you must pay the account’.”

“Since October 2009 I’ve been billed R 16000 mostly for data use. My account was suspended three times without notice….  [The company won't send me] proof of the amount used.”

“My bill from MTN ranges between R1200 and R1400 a month – In October, November and December 2009, I received bills between R11 000 and R14 000 a month! When I queried these bills the answer was always the same: These are amounts that were not billed ‘forgot’ to bill me this amount and ‘there was an error’ on their system and this usage was not billed for. When asked for proof of some kind – seeing as I have not been using the account in December 2009, they told us they could not provide this. Nor would the call centre agent put me through to a Manager to discuss or sort it out. The last time we spoke to someone, they told us to ‘just pay it’ or make a payment plan to pay it off. I have no intention on paying any amounts due to their system faults and without proof of how I could use between R11 000 to R14 000 a month. Inconsistent billing, no service, no response to messages left, no responses to emails and faxes. I had no choice but to change service providers.”

“I am presently on the 500MB package for internet service, cost; R239/Mth. Yet my bill arrives stating just over R1400. I know I have not exceeded my allowance as I check it before and after each session and I only use it to Skype family back home, plus some VERY minor surfing on the odd occasion. This has been raised twice now with MTN, both times I have been greeted by a ‘it happens often’ mentality, told they can not find a reason why the bill is so high and the billing dept will get back to me in 21 days. This is going to be AFTER the money is taken out of my account. Evidence on this website indicates that grossly overcharging their clients is hardly an isolated occurrence here and there, but a standard procedure. This they seem to find an acceptable way to treat their customers. I wonder how they would feel if their clients all decided to settle bills in 21 days or at their leisure, through no fault of their own. To the present time this problem remains unresolved and not taken seriously by MTN.  TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.”

Me Too: Alaska Communications Systems First Among Regional Carriers to Match AT&T/Verizon Wireless Unlimited Pricing

Beyond the nation’s largest wireless phone companies, there are a handful of regional providers delivering service to customers the big carriers bypass.  In one of the nation’s most rural states, Alaska Communications Systems is the first to announce it is effectively matching Verizon Wireless and AT&T’s unlimited pricing plans.

ACS operates a CDMA network in scattered regions across more populated sections of the state.  The company provides 3G access in limited parts of their coverage area — namely larger cities like Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks, but also saw it worth their while to provide service in and around Prudhoe Bay to serve oil workers.

The company also announced an unlimited data plan for $40 a month, although it’s limited to smartphone customers only.  Wireless broadband customers using the company’s USB dongle will pay $80 a month for standalone service, with significant discounts if they bundle other ACS services on their account.

“Alaskans deserve the best network and the best value in wireless service,” said Heather Eldred, ACS assistant vice president, product development. “Wireless data is an area where ACS will distinguish itself in the market and we’re proud to match compelling data plans with the state’s best 3G network.”

ACS also joins Verizon and AT&T in compelling smartphone and other advanced phone owners to purchase a data plan, currently priced at $40 a month for unlimited access.

Other regional players may be forced to match AT&T and Verizon’s new pricing, but if they have data-capable networks, they’re also likely earn new revenue from compulsory data plans whether customers want them or not.

When Is A Price Cut Not A Price Cut? When It Comes From AT&T Mobility and Verizon Wireless

Early reaction and declarations of a price war notwithstanding, yesterday’s “price cuts” from Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility on their unlimited calling plans may bring price increases for many customers who don’t need all of the components of the wireless industry’s Cadillac plans.

First, an explanation of what has changed.

Verizon started the ball rolling announcing a $30 price cut on their Nationwide Unlimited Talk plan.  Formerly $99.99, customers now pay $69.99.  For those with multiple phones on a single account, Verizon’s Nationwide Unlimited Talk Family SharePlan, which includes two lines, now drops to $119.99.  AT&T immediately matched Verizon’s new pricing.  AT&T’s Nation Unlimited plan is now also $69.99 and their shared line plan, FamilyTalk Nation Unlimited is $119.99 and also includes two lines.

Customers currently paying more for a wireless plan with either carrier have to call customer service at either carrier to switch to these plans.  You won’t incur a service charge or extend your existing contract.

Verizon’s plans with unlimited calling and texting features have also dropped in price.  Verizon’s Talk and Text plan costs $89.99 per month, down from $119.99. The Nationwide Unlimited Talk & Text Family SharePlan is now $149.99 per month.  AT&T customers can add unlimited texting to an existing plan, and the rates for doing so remain unchanged — $20 for single phone accounts, $30 for family plan accounts.

However… Here comes the tricks, traps, and gotchas.

For big families with multiple phones, these unlimited plans bring a nasty surprise  — the additional charge for each third, fourth, and fifth line is $49.99 per month for each phone, not the traditional $9.99 each for those on plans with minute allowances.

Those who receive employer-related discounts from the wireless carriers may find those discounts do not apply to the Unlimited talk plans.  Verizon declares all of their unlimited plans are not eligible for any monthly access discounts, period.

AT&T goes out of its way to define what they believe a “voice call” means:

Unlimited voice services are provided primarily for live dialogue between two individuals. If your use of unlimited voice services for conference calling or call forwarding exceeds 750 minutes per month, AT&T may, at its option, terminate your service or change your plan to one with no unlimited usage components. Unlimited voice services may not be used for monitoring services, data transmissions, transmission of broadcasts, transmission of recorded material, or other connections which do not consist of uninterrupted live dialogue between two individuals.

Both AT&T and Verizon Wireless may try and up-sell you on the new data plans when you call to change your plan.  Customers calling both carriers have reported customer service representatives only too willing to provide steep discounts for new handsets or try and convince you to add one of the company’s new data plans.  Take advantage of their offer to upgrade your phone and you’ll likely discover yourself forced to also take a mandatory data plan with it anyway.  The list of phones falling under this trap keeps expanding.

Last year, Verizon started requiring customers choose data plans for the LG EnV Touch and the Samsung Rogue.  With this week’s changes, customers activating LG Chocolate Touch, LG EnV, LG VX8360, Motorola Entice W766, Nokia 7705 Twist, and Samsung Alias2 are now also subject to required data plans.  Don’t expect Verizon Wireless representatives to sell you on their cheapest pay-per-use option, which is priced at $1.99 per megabyte.  I’ve witnessed Verizon Wireless’ store employees pushing Verizon’s new unlimited $29.99 data plan.  If customers complain that’s too much, the $9.99 data plan for a piddly 25MB of access is offered next.  If it looks like a balking customer might cost a sale, the representative will grudgingly sell you pay per use plans.

AT&T customers buying many midrange and “quick-messaging” phones are also going to be required to spend at least $20 a month on a combination of texting and/or data plans. Customers using phones like the LG Neon or the Samsung Propel are affected, and weren’t required to buy data plans before.  Unlimited data for quick-messaging devices is priced at $15 a month.

If you already own a top of the line phone, your data plan charges remain the same.  Verizon customers using Windows Mobile, BlackBerry or Android phones will still pay $29.99 a month for unlimited data.  AT&T customers using the iPhone, BlackBerry, Nokia smartphone or Windows Mobile phones will also pay $29.99 a month for unlimited data.

Customers using wireless broadband with a USB dongle are also unaffected by these changes.  Whether you tether or use the dongle, your usage is limited to 5GB per month.

Existing customers will not be forced to add a data plan until their contract is up for renewal or they upgrade their phones.

Do These Changes Save Customers Money?

For most, the answers is no.  In fact, these pricing changes guarantee higher bills for most customers down the road.

Only a tiny percentage of customers pay for unlimited calling plans because most calling-allowance plans provide generous usage ranges, free night/weekend calling, and often free calling for the most frequently called, or those who are also customers of your wireless carrier.  AT&T even rolls-over unused minutes from month-to-month.  Paying considerably more for an “unlimited” calling option makes little sense for customers not exceeding existing calling allowances.

Changes to calling plans and the features associated with them occur year to year, but many customers prefer to remain on legacy plans that may offer fewer minutes, but have far fewer revenue-enhancing tricks and traps.  Verizon customers hanging on to their America’s Choice II FamilyShare plan offered four years ago maintain 700 minutes of calling time between multiple phones, get free night and weekend calling, and can access data features on their phones that deduct from their airtime allowance instead of billing for data usage charges.  The price?  $60 a month for two lines.  The equivalent plan today is priced at $69.99 for the voice calling plan, plus a mandatory data plan for the increasing number of phone that require one.  Even for phones on a pay-per-use plan, any data access will incur a minimum charge of $1.99 per month.

Where the real money will be made is from overpriced data plans forced on customers whether they want them or not, especially for midrange phones.

Wireless consultant Chetan Sharma estimates fewer than 10 percent of these customers buy data plans.

“There’s a significant number of consumers out there who like the idea of a cutting-edge handset but not of paying for services,” Michael Nelson, founder at Nelson Alpha Research told Business Week.

Wall Street analysts know mandatory data plans will bring exceptional new revenue to both major providers, especially at current prices.

“We could see a move upwards rather than downwards [in revenue/earnings],” says Jennifer Fritzsche, an analyst at Wells Fargo Securities in Chicago, who recommends buying shares of AT&T and Verizon Communications.  “Any kind of voice pricing is very much a commodity,” Fritzsche tells Bloomberg News. “Data is the future.”

JPMorgan is celebrating the potential windfall for both companies and their stocks, estimating just two percent of customers will realize any savings from these pricing changes, while many more will see prices increase.

For Verizon Wireless, it’s party time.  Even though Credit Suisse analyst Jonathan Chaplin estimates the carrier will sacrifice $540 million in voice revenue, they’re likely to gain $630 million in data plan sales. The costs of providing the service are likely to be minimal, considering most of the customers now forced to choose a plan are unlikely to use it much.

“Price War” or “War on Customers”

Still, some on Wall Street are unhappy with the prospects of any pricing changes that head downwards, especially if it sparks a price war.  Some have dumped their wireless stocks as a result of industry trends this year.  But what they may need to worry more about is the prospect of middle class customers switching from traditional postpaid two-year contract plans to prepaid services that offer light and medium mobile users better value with fewer tricks and traps.

As families face the prospect for $100+ monthly bills just for cell phone service, with mandatory data charges likely to add another $20-30 on top of that, will non-power-users stick with AT&T and Verizon for service?  Sprint and T Mobile argue they already offer better value for the hard-hit middle class, but prepaid mobile has garnered new respect for its simpler plans and easy-to-understand billing (and taxes and fees are typically included in the prepaid plan price.)

Formerly the domain of those willing to pay a steep per minute fee and buy top-up cards at convenience stores, today’s prepaid wireless plans often offer month-to-month service with familiar “minute bucket”-allowances or unlimited calling, and operate on Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, or T-Mobile’s nationwide networks.

A real price war has broken out in the prepaid wireless sector, with competitors offering unlimited calling plans as low as $40 a month.  Straight Talk, using Verizon Wireless’ network, goes even lower for a simple 1,000 minute/1,000 text/30MB web access plan for $30 a month.  The only downside is a very limited selection of phones.  Regional players like MetroPCS and Cricket offer comparable pricing for their unlimited plans, but their network coverage is a shadow of the larger players, roaming agreements notwithstanding.

As major carriers pile on extra fees for services many customers don’t want, many will find far better values in the prepaid phone marketplace.  Without the two-year contract common on major carriers, customers can switch providers at will, taking their phone number with them in most cases, if one provider doesn’t provide good service.  Best of all, they don’t have to pay for a cancellation fee or take services they don’t want or need just to satisfy AT&T and Verizon’s quest for cash.

FCC Drops Proposal to Swipe Spectrum From Broadcasters to Reallocate to Wireless Providers

Under stiff opposition from the nation’s broadcasters, the Federal Communications Commission has dropped a proposal to reallocate a significant chunk of the UHF broadcast television spectrum to wireless communications companies.

As Stop the Cap! recently reported, the wireless industry sought the reallocation to broaden the bandwidth available for wireless broadband services.  The proposal would have paid broadcasters to adopt a new “cell tower”-like model of repeater antennas to provide broadcast television in more localized areas, reducing distant signal reception.  This would permit stations to be packed closer together with less chance of interference with each other.  Broadcasters reacted angrily to the proposal, suggesting it would limit reception and the launch of additional channels and communications services available from their new digital television service.  It would also cause a nightmare for consumers less than a year after the end of most analog television transmissions.

For now, the FCC will adopt a voluntary strategy allowing stations to relinquish spectrum and receive compensation.

The wireless industry was not happy with the decision, and the industry’s trade and lobbying group weighed in.

“The record overwhelmingly demonstrates there’s a need for additional spectrum for mobile broadband services,” said CTIA President and CEO Steve Largent. “We continue to believe that all spectrum should be on the table for potential reallocation, including the almost 300 MHz allocated for broadcast television use, which is spectrum most favorable to mobile broadband. We look forward to working with the Commission and the broadband team to consider mechanisms to put spectrum to its highest use.”
