Time Warner Cable Rolling Out Updated On-Screen Look in Some Areas

Phillip Dampier June 5, 2012 Consumer News, Time Warner Cable, Video 1 Comment

Time Warner Cable is rolling out a new look to its online program guide and set top box menus after ongoing criticism from customers who found the old look hard to read and software cumbersome to use.

Central New Yorkers woke up this morning to the upgraded look, which the company says now features a sleeker and more modern appearance. It also adjusts the color scheme to make on-screen text easier to read and channels easier to find.

Set top box software is criticized even by cable executives, who call the often-proprietary software outdated and difficult to update and manage. Some cable operators have licensed set top box software from TiVo, while others are switching to an IP-based “web”-like experience that can offer viewers more detail and a customized appearance.

Ultimately, some cable executives would like to see the back of set top boxes altogether, hoping future technology upgrades will let viewers access cable programming and features from hardware built-in to modern televisions.

Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt is among them.

“I hate set-top boxes,” Britt said in a recent interview.

  1. Doug Jones says:

Yeah, I don’t think their new color scheme is going to make it easier to read the on-screen menus and program guides. For some strange reason Time Warner Cable decided to move from bright colors with easy to see contrasts to subdued grey text on black backgrounds, making it almost impossible to read in regular light conditions in our home. What a joke!

Even more annoying is that they seized control of the boxes at 24:40 hours on this past Monday night, yes during regular late-night programming like Jimmy Fallon, and for the next 1 hour and 40 minutes or more, nothing was watchable through the cable box. When it did finally come back up, many of the channels were not able to be viewed until we reboot the box again manually.

To make matters worse, TWC decided to remove the TV Guide channel (basic TV show listings) from baseband channels a couple of months ago, keeping many home-owners and small businesses from even being able to look up and see what programs are coming up without said dysfunctional yet over-priced cable box. If it was a matter of programming costing too much, as they often say, then simply list the program guide without actual shows like used to be done. Not everyone can afford Digital Cable just to have a program listing.

If only Time Warner Cable adhered to some common sense FCC anti-monopoly rules, or common business practices about the customer coming first. Small customers just don’t seem important to this giant monopoly anymore.
