While AT&T and Verizon invest billions in their increasingly profitable wireless services, their landline networks have languished across the country.  While that can inconvenience customers who may wait days or longer for service to be restored, one New York family is blaming Verizon for the death of their mother, after the company left their all-important phone line unrepaired for days, even after being notified of its critical need for medical reasons.  Now the family is asking, what does it take to get Verizon to repair basic phone service these days?  WABC has this exclusive report of one family’s anguish.  (4 minutes)

I can’t imagine anything more tragic than to show the results of deregulation that large corporations have lobbied so heavy for and continue to do so against the interests and safety of consumers. With no oversight, and no government consumer watchdog, expect to see more of this in the future. If you listen to the whole thing, they actually had a cell phone. He was afraid it would interfere with his pace maker, so he doesn’t use it. So did she ever use it around him? Because what would be the difference. Plus, you can either use it and take the risk, or watch your wife die.

This also happened while the Union workers decided to go on strike and were cutting peoples lines. So if anyone is to blame, you blame the union’s and the destruction they were causing, not Verizon.

Call 911 from a landline generally ensures that emergency services knows where to go. Can’t say the same for cell phones, so if your last act before slipping into unconsciousness is to call 911…
