Comcast Boosting Number of Speed Tiers in DOCSIS 3 Markets, Will Top Out at 105Mbps

Phillip Dampier February 23, 2011 Broadband Speed, Comcast/Xfinity, Internet Overcharging 6 Comments

Comcast is increasing the number of speed tiers available to broadband customers in markets where DOCSIS 3 broadband upgrades have been completed.  The new options are part of the company’s effort to rebrand its product line under the Xfinity name.

Broadband Reports notes the new speed choices come with different price points depending on regional competition and service bundling.  The Economy Plus tier is also only offered to customers calling to complain about high broadband pricing, and may not be available everywhere.  The company’s highest speed tier will be available in about half of their markets by the summer.

All plans are subject to the company’s 250GB usage cap.

Economy – 1.5 Mbps downstream, 384 kbps upstream
Economy Plus – 3 Mbps downstream, 768kbps upstream
Performance Starter – 6 Mbps downstream, 1 Mbps upstream
Performance – 15 Mbps downstream, 2 Mbps upstream
Blast – 25 Mbps downstream, 4 Mbps upstream
Extreme – 50 Mbps downstream, 10 Mbps upstream
Extreme 105 – 105 Mbps downstream, 20 Mbps upstream

What’s the point of a 105mbit service with a 250gb cap? There seems to be little to recommend it over the 50mbit service aside from the increased upload speed, but then why not just offer a 50/20 plan and be done?

    Pointless.

Like a Nascar Racecar with a 1 gallon gas tank. Its not the speed, its the cap… These guys are such huge blood suckers… They KNEW the internet was going to need bandwidth, and alot of it, in 2003 when they first put in the cap. And the BS that 95% stay below the limit, is getting more and more ludicris every passing day.

I have touched the cap or slightly exceeded it 8 of the last 12 months. And the day I have have to stop my usage or really risk going over is getting earlier and earlier every month. I’m at 92% and its the 26th of Feb, thankfully it’s a short month.

Thank goodness for lax neighbors who let me tap in. But even they are gettng closer and closer, without my piggybacking…

So the day of reckoning will be upon Comcast sooner rather than later. If they force too many into Business Class (which they WON’T OFFER in my neighborhood), the out cry to re-regulate cable/ISPs is going to grow louder and louder.

And no, we just use internet for browsing, watching TV, kids listen to pandora and watch Hulu, we play a few MMORPGs, and use Comcast Backup, Mozy and Dropbox for file sync and backup of critical files from our PCs.

Rift was just released. 8.5 GB a download, plus more. Beta, etc. 3 PCs and BAM, 24GB hit.

      Come on now…

Just to say you have it I’d suppose, lets them deflect some of the criticism of Japan/Asia countries offering it, abiet @ rates over 50-75% cheaper at higher speeds than US providers.

I do have the 105mbps speed tier but the upload speed on it is 10mbps not 20mbps i dont thing they have such thing as 105/20 its 105/10
