of course we have been trying, we have been contacting who we can but they always seem to fail us, and even if they do tell them Bell and Rogers just give them the middle finger and hold the new technologies that they are developing hostage until they get their way.

BTW, Cloud Windfoot Omega, I'm NOT Canadian, I'm American. However, I TOTALLY EMPATHIZE with what you folks in Canada are going through.

If Canada is a "free" nation and has a democratically-elected Parliament, then the people IN Parliament SHOULD be SERVING THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE, and NOT the CORPORATE SPECIAL INTERESTS!!! :-(

THAT, above all else, is WHY I'm encouraging ALL OF YOU in Canada to RISE UP AND DEMAND AN IMMEDIATE HALT to ALL INTERNET OVERCHARGING SCHEMES, and TAKE BACK YOUR INTERNET!!!

I SURE AS HELL DON'T WANT ANY American ISP FOLLOWING in Canada's footsteps and going to "metered" broadband!!! If THAT EVER HAPPENS, I ENCOURAGE ALL AMERICAN INTERNET USERS TO CANCEL THEIR INTERNET SERVICE UNTIL THE CORPORATE ISP'S RELENT and GIVE THE INTERNET BACK TO WE, THE PEOPLE!!! :-)

I WISH those "Tea Party" people would TAKE UP OUR CAUSE, and CHAMPION the cause of NETWORK NEUTRALITY and KEEPING THINGS EXACTLY AS THEY ARE NOW!!!

Dean as a Canadian i can say that allot of us have been pissed of and trying to demand things. But it keeps getting us nowhere. then there are the oblivious people who are sheep and dont notice. Unfortunately we dont get anywhere, but we also know that going up even a notch in our demands then we will get even less.

"Rogers claims its all about costs from increased broadband consumption, but one look at their pricing scheme proves that wrong. Rogers reserves the biggest penalties of all for its lightest-use customers. Those on Rogers Ultra-Lite tier suffer with barely-broadband speeds of 500/256 kbps with a usage limit of just 2 GB for a ridiculous $27.99 per month. The penalty rate for customers who can hardly be described as “power users” is a whopping $5 per gigabyte. They pay more because they impact the network more? How does that work?"

Good point! Sounds like the lower tier plans are subsidizing the higher tier plans instead of the other way around!

"We STRONGLY recommend that you do not turn off your modem when you are away from home. Your cable modem has been designed to remain powered at all times. Regularly turning it off and on may result in damage to your cable modem."

I have never seen such a ridiculous statement in my whole life. If I was a customer, you are damn straight I would shut the cable modem off when not in use!

This really depends on how the Cable company measures your usage. In a datacenter environment your connection is measured from the providers router where they assign a network port to you. It's possible if they half-assed their system to record bandwidth usage that you could get charged from incoming traffic to your disabled modem.

Basicly I wouldn't assume anything with the Cable companies that charge on a metered basis, they have no incentive to invest in their measurement systems that to date none have seem to got right, or be honest as that costs them money as well.

Until the majority of customers start screamly loudly about this abuse and cancelling their service, expect this abuse to continue.

Why don't the Canadian people RISE UP and DEMAND AN IMMEDIATE HALT to ALL INTERNET OVERCHARGING SCHEMES??

Why isn't it effective for Canadians to contact their representatives in Parliament and DEMAND TO THEM that they FIRE THE WHOLE DAMN BUNCH OF RUBBER-STAMPERS in the CRTC and REPLACE THEM with MORE CONSUMER-FRIENDLY members??

What I'm afraid of is that, one day, if the Republicans in our country (with the aid of the so-called "Tea Party" movement) get THEIR way, what's happening now in Canada COULD BE IN OUR FUTURE here in the USA!!!

It is NOTHING BUT PURE UNADULTERATED GREED by the Cable & Phone Companies, and I fell that ALL Internet Overcharging schemes MUST be DECLARED ILLEGAL in this country, and ALL "speed throttles" are ILLEGAL unless the broadband provider can give evidence, VERIFIED BY A TOTALLY UNAFFILIATED THIRD-PARTY, that such throttles are ACTUALLY NECESSARY!!

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!

We, the Internet consumers, are FED UP with BEING TAKEN FOR A RIDE!!!

It's HIGH TIME for ALL Canadians who are TOTALLY FED UP with BEING TAKEN FOR A RIDE by their OVERCHARGING broadband ISP's to FORM A "TEA PARTY" AND ANGRILY DEMAND that the current CRTC be FIRED AND REPLACED by MORE CONSUMER-FRIENDLY members who will REGULATE these Broadband Internet providers and DECLARE ALL INTERNET OVERCHARGING SCHEMES as UTTERLY ILLEGAL with SUBSTANTIAL FINES AND PENALTIES for ANY ISP that DARES to continue OVERCHARGING the Internet users!!!!

Cable companies are willing to take the entire economy down to enrich themselves. They are hurting creativity. The next big google-esque thing will be invented by somebody who isn't being handcuffed by bandwidth caps

I did a test to see just how much traffic a powered on modem will generate: A whopping 1.5GB a MONTH!

I took a managed switch, made a port based vlan on port 1. It was the only member of the VLAN and made sure to disable any traffic the switch could make (STP, RIP etc). I then made port 2 a specialized mirriored port and connected that to the second NIC on my computer. I disabled all the protocols on that network adapter and verified there was no traffic being generated on that NIC by the computer. I opened up a packet sniffer and let it run for 10 minutes. I got about 360KB of traffic, mostly ARP and DHCP broadcasts. Doing the math, thats about 2MB of traffic an hour, or about 51MB a day, leading to 1.5GB in a 30 day Month! Again, neither the switch nor the computer generated this traffic.
