There is nothing I would consider subversive on my computer but just
the thought of sharing my stuff with the world does not sit right with me.
They can look at it, the cops, the government including HLS just because
they want to or can. (reason for the backlash of HLS's wants). Blu-Ray
was a good idea and would have made stores shelf's by the ton if not
for all the built in protection forced on the makers. If they could only make
a device without all the rules does what you want anytime you want to
it would have been great. DVD's are the CD's of today and there is nothing
wrong with CD's still. Blu-Ray will never become mainstream as the next
generation of burners comes along but nobody is making much effort
knowing what rules have to be built in to make Hollywood happy.
Vista was a flop for many of the same reasons and windows 7 a little
better but still phones home all the time with your information no matter
what they tell you. So online storage is not a deal maker for me. It's price
and lack of caps that makes the deal for me.

Emotions are pretty high on both sides. Progressive Party defenders are passionate, and skillful, in advocating BT as a fabulous public asset. On the other side, the Burlington Free Press forums are full of rants by those who oppose the city administration in general, and the very idea of BT in particular. Now come the 124 questions from the Vermont Public Service Board, which, in lawyer-ly counterpoint to all the shouting, make for a cold read.

The real threat to BT comes not from all the Prog-haters, but the fiduciary mandate of the PSB to protect taxpayers, not only from any loss, but--and this is important--any RISK of loss. This comes across clearly in the PSB document, and looks increasingly problematic for BT to address. From the standpoint of BT, the $50M invested will be best protected by another $50M or so of build-out, and tie-ins statewide. Will the PSB go along? And what if they don't?

All the grandstanding about how great BT is, or how they can offer this or that service to increase their subscriber base, is irrelevant next to the 900 pound gorilla of "taxpayer risk." Councillor Caldwell and Mr. Franco have expressed vigorous and heartfelt defense of BT, but the PSB is not listening. They want the answers to the 124 questions in writing.

If I wanted to back up my data, I would burn it on a DVDr. Hopefully, Bluray will come down in price some more and be more feasible to do than DVDr. HDD's in particular, have moving parts which will fail eventually. I could go the RAID route but I don't have the money for several HDD's. I could back it up off site but again, isn't really cost feasible for me. DVDr's are around 60 cents a disk for 4.5GB, cheap.

On-site backup only protects you against (some) user error and main disk failure. That's why my two main computers are backed up off-site for $100 per year. I did my initial backup while I had Comcast's 50/10 service; now I'm back on 22/5. The connection is fast enough to generally keep up with the volume of content I create/edit, though a 20 Mbps symmetric fiber connection would be awesome right about now. BT could do that, at least on their own network, and possibly get some business customers due to the economy of something that would effectively be a high-bandwidth private line on the cheap.

The costs should be no secret by now. They all plant a ringer
inside and know everything.
Trust my backups to third parties? your kidding right. Ever heard
of putting you important stuff in small group folders and using a DVD
burner or one of those new fancy 5 TB externals. Google is not getting my
privates. I will not even sign for Gmail.
