Frontier is a Joke. No better than Verizon I'm sure. No broadband where I live and they raised dialup by five bucks a month with absolutely no improvements to service. They are pathetic in my opinion and will not help the state in any way.

Actually... A couple of years ago, Fibernet was contracted to run cable on the poles by the company that purchased cable in that area (can't recall their name). They were in the process (large spools of cable everywhere), when they suddenly stopped. I called Fibernet about it and they stated that they were in a lawsuit with Verizon over running the lines. The cable company must have lost as they never continued their work.

Additionally, I have a home in South Hills in Charleston. I currently have Verizon DSL (switching to Sudden Link next week), but the max download speed is 1.5 mb. This is one of the densest capital centers in the state. You are correct that it's all about return on investment, but if Verizon's calculator tells them that South Hills is not worth the investment, then I welcome another company that uses a different calculator.

In both cases, Verizon just wants a layup. Their unwillingness to invest in the future, without guaranteed financial success, is the reason I'm happy to see them go. Let's give someone else a try, where they have failed.

Also, can you say FIOS? You may be able to pronounce it, but you can't see it. You certainly never will in WV, as long as Verizon is using their riskless calculator.

One more thing... I understand that it's the Union and some Legislators whining about the deal. Any position taken by Union members or WV Legislators is a losing position. That's a no brainer and speaks for itself. Those two groups of Neanderthals are the primary reason that WV is the 3'rd world state it is today and why were even having these discussions, because Verizon doesn't think they can make easy money in this poor pitiful state.

If Verizon is not there yet, there is a reason. Most of it has to do with how rural we are, and the kind of products for rural WV that Verizon has versus what Frontier has. But is NOT that Veriozon will not allow someone else to use the poles nor that Verizon attempts to thwart any provider (DOJ and FTC would not allow it, nor would they have approved the Frontier deal.) The problem is not Verizon but there are just few providers in WV. Telcos, cable companies, then satellite, very few wifi companies. . But if you had the capital and wished to be a broadband provider, you, too, could nlease the poles as Verizon does from APCO in most places, run the wire and backhaul to the Internet. Cable company does not do it because .... there is no profit if it costs more to provide the service than there are customers to buy it. And if you can find any company, any at all, that speculates on where it will or will not provide a service next. good luck.

While broadband service from Frontier could arguably be less attractive than what Verizon offers, in certain areas, I welcome the opportunity for a new provider to succeed where Verizon has been a miserable failure. I have a home in rural WV that currently has zero broadband options. Verizon owns the poles in that area and has been able to successfully thwart any possibility of broadband access. Verizon will not provide the service to it's customers, nor will it allow any cable company to run lines on it's poles and provide service either. The situation is intolerable and I'm very happy to see Verizon hit the road. Additionally, their arrogance extends further with a policy of complete secrecy, regarding future expansion and deployment. Again... Bye Bye Verizon and don't let the door slam you on the way out. Frontier may offer crappy service, but that's better than no service.
