Protecting Your Turf: Cablevision Seeks to Provide Wi-Fi On Long Island/Metro North Railways

Phillip Dampier September 2, 2009 Cablevision, Competition, Video, Wireless Broadband 3 Comments

optimumWhen Verizon FiOS is moving in on your turf, one way to preserve customers is to hand out free Wi-Fi service for your customers on-the-go.  Cablevision’s Optimum Wi-Fi service aims to do just that, with thousands of Wi-Fi hotspots installed across metropolitan New York, Connecticut and New Jersey.  Many hotspots can be found at shopping centers, on main streets and train platforms, in parks, marinas, and at sports fields.  The company claims Optimum WiFi, running for a year now, is already available at nearly 96% of commuter rail platforms and station parking lots serving Long Island and Westchester County.

Now the company wants to extend access into the trains commuters across the area ride every day and evening.  The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority has been seeking proposals to provide Wi-Fi to customers.  Cablevision has filed a proposal to provide the service in partnership with the MTA, providing access to Cablevision customers at no charge, and perhaps sharing revenue with the MTA for non-Cablevision customers signing up for temporary access.

“As one of the nation’s leading telecommunications providers and a well-established local company that has already made a significant commitment to deploying Optimum WiFi across the New York metropolitan area, Cablevision is uniquely positioned to quickly and seamlessly deliver a high-quality WiFi network across the LIRR and Metro North railroad system,” said Kevin Curran, Cablevision’s senior vice president of wireless product development. “We have delivered a proposal that would provide significant benefits to all parties, and are excited and encouraged by the prospect of providing Optimum WiFi service to the MTA and its ridership. We look forward to participating in a process that will result in the availability of fast and reliable WiFi service on the railroads.”

    OPTIMUM OWNS, FIOS BLOWS.
Firstly Verizon is the most evil teleco i have ever encountered that only spews BS lies and thrives on ppl being ignorant/uninformed. They make ppl think that just because fiber is in the house that means its better == BS. Modern cable infrastructure is mostly fiber, they only use coax from the pole/switchbox to ur house, that saves them and u money on running fiber into the premises which wouldnt add any benefits to the enduser or the cable company. Modern embedded signal processors are now fast enough to transmit data over copper as fast as most fiber implementations. The only advantage fiber has in this situation is that the cable can be longer without needing a repeater to boost the signal(less attenuation). which in the case of cable infrastructure is usually meaningless. So wats left, speed, price, and stability of the service. Since both infrastructures are mostly fiber, the stability is the same, and the speed/price are much much better from optimum. Verizon loves raping their customers. Both TV services offer the same quality HD service so that claim vz makes thats its the best quality, is yet again another lie. So in comparison of FIOS and OOL, only a retard picks FIOS if OOL is an available option.
I also wanna mention how badely their wireless services are. They use oldschool cdma2000 technology, that in no way is able compete with the speed, quality, and availablity of gsm/umts/hsdpa. For some reason ppl think verizon has the best service, and I think that is due to BS advertisements, and retards trying to justify their expensive crappy phones/service. Also the phones they use are exclusive to them(totalcrap) or are manufacturer modified gsm phones made to work with cdma which are released months after the gsm versions hit the market. The latter are made poorly made cuz they use crappy cdma chips that are bigger and use more power which stresses the original(gsm) design of those phones resulting in inferior overall quality compared to their gsm counterparts.
P.S. the security on the VZWireless network is a joke, a 10yr old with some skills can evesdrop on and/or hijack any phonecalls u make.
P.P.S evesdropping/hijacking is also possible on gsm but is harder to achieve. Shh ;)

The only reason that you can declare “FIOS BLOWS” is because you are in an Optimum area. Cablevision is the only serious competitor to Verizon at this point, they are actually competitive because they are trying to survive. CV has the most overlap with FIOS and UVERSE over any other large cable company. If you moved a couple of towns over and went into TWC or Comcast territory it would literally change your perspective overnight. Cox is okay, as long as they don’t enforce caps in your area. Cablevision is the best large cable company in the country which means that it can get A LOT WORSE.

I myself have personally switched over to CV from Fios about a month ago due to billing issues. The HD on CV and Fios is comparable however Fios has a slight edge (not that noticeable though). In terms of SD FIOS blows CV away in almost every way, I even prefer Directv or DISH SD quality to what CV offers. The guide is also horrendously slow on CV, CV may not charge extra for HD however they charge for Premium on demands (hbo, showtime etc). What I hate the most about CV is that they gave me the worst possible DVR model that they could find the notorious Scientific Atlanta 8300Hd with technologically so outdated that it will feel like it’s 1996.

Overall in terms of service I would say that if you live in Connecticut, get Optimum over Uverse. However if you were in NY or NJ Fios has slightly better quality but MUCH worse billing compared to CV.

the billing prosses with bolth v.f and c.v suck . the v.f security tools caused my computer to crash . if you go on line and google wi-fi thare is more help with stealing wi-fi useing cow-patty and old t.v antenna mods with fiol ,cans ,fencing , and copper pipes . but al in all the v.f is supperior to c.v when watching t.v shack videos or downloading b.t files
