YouTube offers some closed captioning on some of their videos as well. I'm not even sure if Google has even worked that out yet so that users can add CC to their videos. Right now though they have those annotations features.

More streaming sites need to support closed captioning/subtitles. Hulu does offer CC on some of their content, but most of the rest of the sites (I'm looking at you specifically Netflix) don't. This is a problem for the hearing impaired and household with non-native English speakers.

The bitter irony of the latest Viacom / TWC clash is that TWC basically told customers that Viacom are being dicks, you should go watch their programming free on the web. And now of course, after TWC reached a deal with Viacom that they can accept they're turning around and trying to make it very difficult for customers to watch TV free on the web.

Not sure if that's ironic or just slimy actually....

@Rooker

Yes, there are several options to watch tv shows without having to subscribe to cable or satellite nowadays and it is forcing those companies to do something. For the longest time, we didn't have cable or satellite in our home but we got our shows off of the internet in 720p HD and commercial free through Usenet. Here recently, we subscribed to AT&T Uverse IPTV. I am thinking about canceling the tv service and upgrading the internet service because there just isn't anything on their U200 or even U100 package worth paying the high monthly cost for that I couldn't get off the internet.

If the cable and satellite companies want to continue making a buck in the industry, they need allow customers the ability to "choose" the channels they want to pay for instead of just throwing a bunch of useless channels with worthless programming onto them whether they like it or not. There are only a few channels that I watch as well as my wife: history channel, discovery, TLC, Science, Military, NatGeo, Scifi, and a few others. At most, maybe 15 from the cable and satellite channels and the rest are local channels.

Also, you can't lay blame totally on the cable and satellite companies. Some of these networks charge them exuberant fees to carry their programming. I remember Viacom and Time Warner were going at it awhile back, where Viacom, the network that carries MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, ect, wanted Time Warner to cough up quarter of a billion dollars for the privilege of carrying their programming. No wonder our cable and satellite prices are so high! And the kicker is, I rarely watch those channels in the 1st place if at all so why am I paying for their stupid overly priced programming to begin with?

I haven't actually watched TV on a TV in a few years. I canceled my cable service back in 2006, after realizing that the internet is a lot more entertaining. My television is nothing more than a large display device for my DVD player.

I discovered last year that I could get my BSG fix by watching it on the SciFi channel's web site. Then I saw that CBS had several TV shows up on their site, including Jericho (pls bring Jericho back :( ). Then I discovered Hulu and suddenly I was watching TV again, except without the TV. Hi advertisers, I saw your ads because you sponsored a smart TV network.

Anything I can't watch because it's blacked out or region controlled or they want me to install some sort of DRM'd video player - or any other sort of rubbish - just doesn't get watched. Or I'll use an *ahem* "unapproved" method of watching it. Hi advertisers, I didn't see your ads because you sponsored a stupid TV network that shot themselves in the foot.

And that's the REAL reason that TW wants to impose caps - to kill internet provided competition!
