First off - TWC - I hope you bastards rot in hell! And F**K you very much for siding with our new communist government in regulating consumers in the Internet area as well as trying to stuff your pockets more! This whole thing is just another ploy to prevent people from obtaining information from the commies that could possibly be used against them. When us REAL Americans take our country back, you're one of the first to go!

WHAT A JOKE this all is! - By the way, I live in Austin, Texas. Why they had to come and pick on us is beyond me (out of thousands and thousands of other cities). Something says corruption right there.

I'm a computer programmer who actually VPN's from home twice a week and need lots of bandwidth just to do my job.

- other activities via the net which I do frequently: YouTube, emails, some torrents, rss feeds, Microsoft Updates, and Anti-Virus updates ... Time Warner needs to understand that this is the NORM nowadays ... get use to it and don't act like its all some new revelation ... its been going on for years now ...

... I digress ...

And to think that I was once a customer who proudly supported Road Runner. Unbelievable!

Anywho ... I have just switched over to UVerse and you will be getting a call from me in the next week to cancel services(fee or no fee)!

TWC broke their contract with me (unlimited Internet access) to regulate my bandwidth and now I'm breaking my contract with them - Guess we're even now.

What a waste of time this all is - I should sue for mental anguish!

And NO, none of this has anything to do with bandwidth over usage. Hell you @ssh0les have had over 10 years to start upgrading your systems/hardware and even have fiber optics by now.

The Internet needs to be a free tool!

PERIOD!

Believe it or not, you can just call TW and have them switch you to Earthlink. That is what I did about a month ago.

It just goes to show you how disconnected from their customer they are. They are so afraid of actually being honest with their customers that they have layered themselves with so much beaurocracy that the local rep's and the people responsible for communicating with the customer can't have a truthful conversation. Perhaps the Austin Man of the Year needs to get on the phone with the customer and tell us what is really going on.

Got my reply...steaming hot pile of S!

"The trial of the proposed bandwidth consumption based billing plan for Road Runner customers will take place over a few months; likely to begin in late spring and continue through the Summer. Specific details regarding the plan are currently not yet available. Please be assured that once those details are available, we will be communicating with our customers through out the trial and we’ll have the proper tools made available to our customers, so that they will know what their monthly usage is and be able to make an informed decision on what level of service is appropriate before any actual billing ever begins (in many cases no changes to your existing service will be necessary). Our goal is to make sure that are customers are well informed through out the trial period. We will continue to communicate with our customers as more information becomes available. If you have additional questions or inquiries please feel free to contact one of our Customer Care Professionals, available 24/7 at 1-800-756-7956. Please do not respond to this e-mail as replies will not be received.

Thank you for choosing Time Warner Cable."

A small correction to your article:

"And as for digital distribution of software, games and applications purchasable on services like Stardock and Steam,"

I think you meant to say, "Impulse and Steam". Stardock is a software company, and Impulse is their digital distribution platform.

And speaking of Stardock, there is currently a thread on their forums about this issue: http://forums.galciv2.com/345077

I'm with you. I just installed DD-WRT on my router last night. Without even watching hulu, streaming to my roku, or playing online games (on xBox upstairs or downstairs) I ripped through 600megs is 6 hours. (mostly the wife reading news, facebooking, and 1 or 2 youtube videos.

I was just saying that if their argument is that the cost to provide people with bandwidth was the real issue, why won't they charge an appropriate amount for what I use. When I fill up at the gas station, they don't sell me gas in tiers. It will be 15 dollars for 3 gallons of gas, then $5 for each additional gallon. Nor do I buy the $50 for 15 gallons expecting to only use 10 gallons.

If they can't sack up and just come out and say:

"We here at TW are loosing viewers to the internet. Rather than embracing this type of change, we are going to rob a small amount of our customers for undetermined amount of time. We think we can get away with this forever. Luckily for us, we can do this since we have no real competition. Sure we know that some of our customers will abandon us for inferior internet service, but we can still rape them on their cable T.V. price hikes. What is that you ask? Yes, we know that the substantial decline in customers might happen quickly, but we'll just raise our rates on the remaining customers. After all, as more of the worlds content, and way of doing business, moves to the internet, there are thousands of people that will surely go over their limits. Duh people... do the math. You know how many people have wireless internet protected through WEP encryption. Anyone't neighbor can get through that. Instead of wasting money on the 3 times a week flyers, advertising our all in one packages (soon to be just cable... Like we are gonna advertise that we have caps), we will send out different flyers. We will be sending out flyers to the immediate neighbors of remaining road runner subscribers, explaining how to receive free internet access through your neighbor's wireless connection. In fact, we have estimated that the first year will have record profits. We expect to see many three to four $1000 a month bills out there. Not to mention the untapped senior market. Just about every government agency is moving to online business. You know how many new users that will mean. Surely they will start to use the internet for hulu or start watching movies online. You think that old people even know what a gigabyte is? Please! It only takes one or two months to rack up some serious overage."

I called earthlink today and they told me i needed to cancel with tw, then call them back, then they would schedule an install date. When I tried ordering it online, you have to schedule an install. there was no option to tell them that you already had an account with the actual provider.

I have a feeling that Earthlink will be switching over when time warner tells them to, but I figure, why should TWC get my money. Plus... It gets me a bit closer to ditching TWC for my TV as well. I don't want to go back to satellite. I'm looking at the dish right now. (Their HDTV is better anyways. Some of their HDTV is actually 1080p.

heh.. Those damn cable abusers.

We all know what this is. It is a money grab for something we are basicly addicted to. It's a dick move. If their CEO's really believe that this is what the people have been craving, than they should have had the guts to try it in markets with actual competition as a test. They are really opening up a can of worms here. They are doing this test with existing customers that are resoundingly against it. With any luck, their actions will put them under scrutiny in front of the Texas or New York government. If we are lucky, maybe it would result in deregulation. They deregulated the phones and the electricity. It didn't lower what people pay, but it at least gives you a voice by choosing who you get your service from.
