Where I live in Webster, NY, we tried DSL last year and it wasn't bad at all. I saw good download speeds and very good upload compared to what Roadrunner has here. But what we saw that did affect our decision to return to RR was latency and that latency appeared within the local Frontier network on the first and second hops. Apparently because I had been in close touch with one of their marketing reps along with one of their more senior techs, they let me out of my contract after one months grace period and then actually being in the contract for two months. The people that I dealt with at Frontier were first class all the way and were willing to work with me to try to get to the bottom of those latency issues. But even the senior tech said after a while that they were going to have to invest a bit more in their infrastructure...specifically the lines that run between their CO's ... in order to fix the latency problem that we were seeing.

see the 'Excessive Utilization of Network Resources' chapter in clearwire's acceptable use policy. They reserve the right to limit a user's bandwidth if they feel it's excessive. Frontier's AUP currently lists the famous 5GB limit.

"I admittedly do not understand much about “naked DSL” type service so please feel free to share your insights, if any."

Naked DSL is simply DSL without dialtone. The DSL pair is sent to your house to connect directly to a modem.

If you are absolutely desperate to find out what your speed might be with DSL "A BALL PARK ESTIMATE" leave me a message with your address and phone number @ 777-8658 I work with frontier and can give you an idea.

Thanks Phil, I guess we'll see how this all plays out in the next few months. I called TWC today to voice my concern and the CS rep told me they are only planning on doing "testing" this summer and they will determine what will happen after that based on the "testing". The problem is testing over the summer will not get an accurate reading. Family's on vacation, kids outside playing, college students gone home for the summer, of course its going to show much lower numbers than it would in say February or March.

I also asked the CS rep why every news station in Rochester is already reporting that its a done deal and I was told they didn't have any information on that. So its pretty obvious to me that they are trying to keep us customers in the dark as much as possible. I would make a safe bet that if the media didn't break this story TWC would not have said anything to us and just started charging us come September.

Usually you will be told when ordering whether there is a problem in installing DSL at your location. If you have a metro Rochester exchange number, you are probably in the West Brighton - Brighton-Henrietta Townline Road exchange. If you have a Henrietta number, I suspect you are too far out from the primary central office, but Frontier will have a satellite CO nearby to reduce the distance.

I don't think you will have any problems either way.

Earthlink gives you six months at $29.95, so they have a new customer discount.

How can you find out how far you are from one of Frontiers CO? I live in West Henrietta off of E River Rd and have had TWC for years. I run a small computer repair, upgrade shop out of my house and just on all the windows updates I do in a month it would put me over the 40gb cap. Not to mention my normal usage I know I would be over 100gb.

I think the new pricing plan is outrageous and even the people who are considered "lite" users I think will end up paying overages if they sign up for the 20gb plan. People don't understand how much bandwidth is consumed from normal web browsing. Websites are getting more and more advanced with video, music and hi-rez pictures, it adds up quickly. Not to mention all the video streaming sites and iTunes. If you have teenagers in the house who use facebook, myspace, youtube then expect that 20 or 40gb to go away fast.

If Earthlink doesn't cap there service i'll probable switch to them, if they do a cap then Frontier here I come.

I am suprised they choose Austin. They are a very vocal town, which happens to be the state capital, that prides themselves on being the high tech's Silicon Hills. The last people you want to piss off are a bunch of voting geeks that have access to virtually every state legislator.

Has anyone heard microsoft's response to TWC's "test"? The amount of money they are gonna loose from xbox live subscribers has the potential to be huge.

To Brion: Since I am telecommuting and I am on the phone a lot. I need to keep work and home lines separate. I was mentioning my extensive use of VOIP to underline the level of reliability I have been experiencing.

Granted, with dsl it matters a lot where you live (quality of phone lines and wiring, distance to central office). But since people mostly write when they have a gripe with their service I thought I put this into perspective with a positive review.

So here it is to sum up my personal experience with Frontier:
1. Support is good (not stellar but responsive)
2. Reliability for me has been great
3. Price/Value is OK (Have a package with unlimited in-state calling for less than $80 including tax.)
4. I get consistent (!) speeds of +5 Mb up and 400Kb down.

Note re speed: As I mentioned before it really depends on where you live and the condition of your wiring. I don't know of anyone who gets their advertised maximum bandwidth of 10Mb. But I am satisfied with a consistent and reliable +5 Mb. If you are interested, just call them up and give them your address. They should be able to calculate the distance from you to the next CO and give you an estimate on the bandwidth at your location.

I think I have to chime in on the side of Frontier.

I know that some folks have their problems with Frontier, especially those in more rural areas. But I have to say that I have been a happy Frontier customer for the last 5 years.
For the last 4 years I have been telecommuting several days a week, using VOIP and desktop remoting all day long and never had a problem. I can remember only 2 brief outages in 5 years and a period of 1.5 days with severe mail routing latencies on Frontier's side. Other than that I found Frontier to be very reliable. Like Rottenchester, I get consistently more than 5Mb down and about 400 Kb up (even at 4:00PM when the school kids use up Time Warner's shared bandwidth ;-). Their pricing is also quite competitive, especially if you take one of the bundle deals.

Secretly, I am waiting for FIOS - but I don't think Verizon has any plans of bringing FIOS to Rochester.

Folks like us in the rural suburbs of Rochester are really stuck. We're within the TWC coverage area but outside Frontier's. RoadRunner was our best option for high speed. I could get DSL from Verizon. But, I understand that they have caps. Service would be slower too, as we're a ways away from the head-end.

I'm not sure what we're going to do. I work from home and need the high speed. I know from my logs that I will regularly come near the 40 GB cap and that's without doing much online video (we watch a missed show every once in a while), no gaming, no peer to peer stuff. My kids are growing though and all that will be hitting soon.

I've written to TWC email address. I also wrote to my NYS representatives. Maybe FiOS will come to Wayne county where we are. I hope!

I've been on Frontier DSL for years and found it reliable and reasonably fast. I'm pretty close to a CO so I think I'm getting as good as you're going to get with DSL. I just did a file transfer test and got 555 kb up, and 5176 Mb down.

I switched to Dish and Frontier about 5 years ago for two reasons. First, TWC's cable service would deteriorate in my neighborhood at about 3 p.m. every day, when the kids got home and started using YouTube, WoW, IM, etc. Second, the TWC DVR was a real piece of crap.

Dish's DVR is a really nice unit - you can run two TVs off of it and either TV can watch recorded programs. No other DVR has that feature.

I've been with Time Warner Roadrunner for many years, but after reading this and doing a quick calculation of my bandwidth usage, it looks like I'll be forced to move to another provider. I don't use BitTorrent or other peer to peer file sharing programs, so I don't consider myself a heavy user, but I do use Skype. After doing a quick calculation, it looks like I could easily use 100GB/month bandwidth for Skype alone. I think the 40GB/month usage cap is ridiculous! It's just a way for Time Warner to raise their prices and blame it on the "baddies" who steal bandwidth from everyone else. I think average users will be in for a very rude awakening when they get charged exorbitant amounts for their "overages". We really need more competition in the Rochester area. Service charges here in Rochester are already MUCH higher than they are in Europe, and it's getting worse. I find it really sad that the country that invented the Internet is falling far behind other countries in providing affordable access to the Internet. I know someone from England who gets high speed unlimited Internet AND home phone service which includes unlimited calling to the USA for LESS than the current price of my RoadRunner service ALONE! Why can they do that and we can't?

Thanks for the detailed look into our options. I don't know that I agree that Frontier is the best option, though. What if we don't have home phone service? What if we don't want to sign a two-year contract with anyone, especially a company that is largely responsible for the creation of this website?

I understand that Earthlink may not be as great an option as it seems... it's obvious to me from a 5 minute online chat with a sales rep that their customer service is even worse than TWC, and TWC is terrible. But no contracts and no immediate plans for a cap may provide a temporary landing area for a mass exodus from TWC. But we can't stop at RoadRunner. We have to show TWC that we're not willing to put up with any of their nonsense anymore. No more all-in-one plans. No more Cable TV with TWC. DirecTV and Dish Network offer better programming and better prices. Unfortunately, among other things, TWC does have the advantage of being available everywhere, where satellite is restricted to homeowners and rental units that are not restricted.

This and other areas where TWC has the advantage need to be attacked politically. We can no longer afford to vote for any politician in any election that will turn a blind eye to consumer rights. The lawmakers in the city of Rochester are as much to blame for this monopoly as TWC is, and they need to be stopped. Find out where each of them stand on this and other consumer issues and fight to make their views public. Write them to express your concerns and vote them out of office if they don't listen. If you live in corporate housing that will not allow satellite dishes, gather support from your neighbors and petition the management to end their policies that support monopolistic companies. Keep badgering the media to ensure that the voice of the consumer is heard.

I leave it up to smarter folks than I, but perhaps we need a voter sponsored initiative to tackle these things. One that ends whatever agreement is keeping Verizon FIOS and other viable options out of Rochester and allowing TWC to exist as the sole reliable ISP. Perhaps we could walk into the election booths someday soon and decide the fate of Time Warner without their say, much like they are deciding ours without any input from us.

It can't stop at merely finding a viable alternative. Corporations that commit these types of consumer injustices should be driven to fail, the demand they leave behind to be filled by more consumer-aware organizations. This site is a great beginning, however more needs to be done. We should be going door to door, making phone calls, raising awareness and coming together to do something about this.
